Force Z 2014 #1… before the slaughter.

Tucked away in a quiet area of Queensland, Australia is a tournament called Force Z. The coming weekend will see me attended the first of five Force Z events over the year. This critically acclaimed event, based in Cleveland, is the brain child of Adam Nordberg of Alpha Hobbies. Force Z is a 750pt, no-comp, one day tournament, broken up into five 1hr 15min rounds. The action is fast passed and furious! With armies pitted against each other in a death match where only one will emerge victorious! Well that’s the idea any way. To this event, fully expecting to have my face handed to me, I will bring a gun line guard list of dubious nature (You can see my list here).

The Strategy:

This was a simple one: Shoot! Shoot anything that moves. Shoot anything that stands still. Shoot everything! The only problem was clamming objectives and I knew this was going to be my Achilles heel (what am I saying the whole dam army is my Achilles heel). So I decided to focus on stopping them from getting objectives.

The Missions:

#1 UPDATED ORDERS

Mission: Various mission objectives-

Five objectives, must be one objective in the Centre of the table.

At the start of Game Turn 3, each player rolls a D6 to reveal their mission objectives.

Primary and Secondary Objectives:
1-2 Primary: Purge the Alien – Score one point for each enemy unit you destroy
Secondary: Objectives - Score 3 points for every objective you hold
3-4 Primary: Objectives – Score four points for holding the centre objective and two points for every other objective you hold
Secondary: Purge the Alien – Score one point for each enemy unit you destroy
5-6 Primary: Objectives – Score three points for every objective you hold
Secondary: Purge the Alien – Score one point for each enemy unit you destroy
Deployment: Dawn of War

#2 THE HURT LOCKER

Mission: Big Guns Never Tire (3 objectives)

The centre objective is objective is worth 5 Victory Points. However, each time a unit moves within three inches of the objective, roll a D6. On a roll of 1-3, the objective (Plasma Core) releases a toxic jet of burning plasma. Place the teardrop template so as to cover as many models in the unit as possible. The strike has the following profile:
Burning Plasma – S7 AP2 - If a wound roll is failed, the unit must take a pinning test on 3D6.

Primary Mission:

Each objective (except the plasma core) is worth 3 points.
Destroyed and fleeing heavy support units are worth 1 victory point.

Secondary Mission: Purge the Alien – Score one point for each enemy unit you destroy

Deployment: Spearhead – Table quarters

#3 SABOTAGE
Mission: Sabotage.

Before deployment both players need to place 2 objectives each. Because their Attackers cannot be certain of destroying them properly at distance, these objectives count as having a 4+ invulnerable save against any shooting attack or blast damage they suffer.

Primary Mission: Sabotage.
Score 3 victory points for every enemy objective you destroy and 2 victory points for each objective you hold.

Secondary Mission: Purge the Alien – Score one point for each enemy unit you destroy

Deployment: Vanguard

#4 FIRE SWEEP
Mission: Plant the flag

Both forces are seeking to clear the enemy from this sector. This is achieved through occupying key strategic points. Only scoring units can “plant flags” and they do this whenever one or more models from the scoring unit ends its movement phase on the terrain piece (or its base) with no scoring or denial enemy models on it.

Primary Mission: Each flag planted is worth 3 points.
Destroyed and fleeing fast attack units are worth 1 victory point.

Secondary Mission: Purge the Alien – Score one point for each enemy unit you destroy

Deployment: Dawn of War

#5 WARLORD HAMMER
Mission:

Primary Mission:

Warlord Hammer- Modified “Purge the Alien”. Score victory points as normal. However, killing the opponents Warlord is worth 2 kill points. Killing your opponents Warlord with your Warlord is worth 5 kill points. The Warlord is only ever 1 model, even if in a retinue. The actual Warlord must be killed to score these bonus points.

Secondary Mission: Cleanse – Score one point for every table quarter you hold
Deployment: Vanguard

Thank you to Adam at Alpha Hobbies for putting this tournament packet together. This is only a condensed version of the Force Z #1 Tournament Packet for the whole thing hit up the face book page (here)

Stay tuned for "Force Z #1… after the slaughter." for a roundup of my experience at the tournament and how I fared after the dust and blood settled.

DIGITAL!!! It’s end of days for us all…

I’ll start by making an outlandish, broad sweeping statement:

I HATE DIGITAL!!!

Obviously I don’t hate all digital products or I wouldn’t be here blogging. But the insistence of a certain unmentioned model company to release digital only content has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Although I’d like to own one day, I currently do not have an iPad or any other tablet like device at my disposal (apart from my iPhone which does not support the unmentioned company’s digital products). So every time I see a new digital supplement or any other digital flim flam I get all riled up because I can’t see it as I don’t have a digital device.

I get the line “just download it on your desktop”. Ok I get this; it’s an option available to me. But let’s think this one through. I get all excited and download a copy of, let’s say Codex: Adepta Sororitas (eBook Edition) for $39.99, on to my computer. I read it, I love it and I start a sister’s army. So far this is all fine and dandy.

But wait, here’s the bit that sticks with me: I go to a tournament; they tell you that you need to bring your codex. Do I bring my desktop computer to the event and set it up in the corner just in case someone has a question about my army. Hardly feasible. Someone else will have it on a tablet at the event. Maybe you’re right, but will someone hand over their $800 iPad to a complete stranger, I probably wouldn’t. Print it out, it’s a PDF. Not having purchased one of these digital products I can’t say if it is a PDF, but if so I would imagine they have some sort of lock on printing a hard copy, and yes you can get around those but do you want to lug 50, 60, 70 loose pages around with you? For me without a tablet digital products loose there attraction pretty fast.

So now I’ve had my rant I’m going to do a back flip: The digital direction that the afore unmentionable model company has gone down is great. I think their interactive iPad editions are pretty sweet, and make learning the game a little easier with the USR popups though out the codex/supplement, but these only work on Apple products. The number of products you can squeeze on to a tablet is amazing and if you have the iPad versions they automagically update for you too, no need for pesky FAQs.

At the end of the day digital is here and it isn’t shy about it. It’s a massive step forward in consumer environment where everything is going digital, and I should know I work for a newspaper company. So do I really hate digital? No not really. Will it be the end of us all? Well with increased power consumption and global warming… I’m just kidding, no it won’t be. I’m just jealous that I’m too poor to afford an iPad that’s all… (I did mention I work for a newspaper company right? We get paid peanuts!)

So go buy digital, frolic in all those ones and zeroes while you can and pray to the God Emperor (or Chaos power, which ever you prefer) that there isn’t any major solar flares that wipe out all electronics on earth!

Let me know what you think, am I just crazy? (Yeah I knew that already) Or do others out there think as I do?

Thief! Thief! We hates it! Hates it! FOREVER!

I’d like to take a moment to complain (and a little self-gratifying bemoaning as well) about the lowlifes that broke into our house on Monday night and robbed us. They pilfered over $3,500 worth of portable electronics. This in itself is a violation of our sanctuary but the filthy lowlifes (I have a feeling there were two of them) stole Christmas presents… we had a mass of presents for nieces and nephews we hadn’t seen yet and they stole them. Well they only stole the girl’s presents but really why? You didn’t even know what you were getting, they were wrapped!

This in itself is a violation of our sanctuary but the filthy lowlifes rummaged through our underwear draw… I don’t know if want to where them again. I’ll have to wash them at least…

I’d like to ask why in this day and age do people steal, but I know the answer to that one… They were probably crack heads! And not the good sort, plastic crack heads!.

So why bother posting this you might ask. Well it’s an appeal to everyone out there to make sure your house is secure. This sound obvious and it is. But I thought my place was safe but they found a window, popped a screen and got in. The only chick in my armour and they exploited it. So check your home, check each window and put yourself into the mindset of a thief.

I was lucky I only lost stuff. My wife and 14mth old son was home along at the time sleeping… I shudder to think what would have happened if they discovered the thievery going on. I will never see my stuff again, but I still get to huge my wife and child every weekend when I get home from working away.

The Burnt (the fluffy origins)

The air was thick with acrid smoke wafting from the burning bodies of his brothers. If he still had a nose it might have burnt with the acidic residues that contaminated this once verdant planet. Luckily for him he had long ago been interred in the belly of his iron beast. It was one of the few reasons why he had survived the coming of the Ordo Hereticus when so many of his brothers had faltered in their faith.

The Ironclad Dreadnought lumbered thought the charred debris of his home. The sharp crack of bones could be heard reverberating from the once pristine walls of his beloved monastery. The remains of his heretical brethren unable to withstand the immense weight of his iron form. The all-consuming fires had tempered his resolve, like an artificer’s forge tempers steel. Even if he could, he would not shed a tear for his lost brothers, for he had lost them long ago when their hearts had turned from the emperor.

Reaching the waiting Stormraven he turned and took one last look at the planet of his rebirth and consigned its blackened image to the furthest depths of his memory coils. He knew he would never look upon its beauty or upon the faces of it once abundant populace again. As he was winched into place at the rear of the Stormraven, a lone Techmarine thought he hear an uttered prayer through the static of the dreadnought speakers, but the dreadnought’s unyielding visage expressed nothing but silence.

The Burnt are a small remnant of a space marine chapter whose records have been “lost” long ago. The chapter's home world was deemed to be tainted after an investigation but the Ordo Hereticus. An Exterminatus was ordered and the entire plant was burnt to a cinder. Luckily the chapter's strong hold was a deep crust mining facility that had been depleted of viable minerals and now converted into the chapter's fortress monastery, unluckily only a hand full of the chapter where actually in the safety of the monastery. As such only very small highly devout group of marines survived alongside a proportionally high number of dreadnoughts. They renamed there chapter "The Burnt" and took to the stars to prove there undying faith in the God Emperor.

I wanted to approach this space marine project in a way that would allow me use a hopefully unique colour scheme and also leave me room to create a back story that isn’t confined by the current fiction. Much like the Dark Angels their origins are shrouded in the cloak of heresy and mistrust, whilst being sufficiently ambiguous to allow me to flow their story in a direction of my own choosing. As I win and more likely lose battles with this fledgling army it will somewhat shape how I add units as well as develop the story line. Currently I will be focusing on a 1000pts Zone Mortalis list which I intend to complete for the 2014 Independent Characters Hobby Progress Challenge.

I will update my blog with fluff, hobby progress and hopefully battle reports as I mould this army to my will…
